Jim Gilmore is dropping out of the race for President says Politico.com.
Gilmore states:
I have come to believe that it takes more than a positive vision for our nation's future to successfully compete for the presidency. I believe that it takes years of preparation to put in place both the political and financial infrastructure to contest what amounts to a one-day national primary in February.
While Gilmore was always a longshot, his comments do beg the question of whether other worthier candidates are being barred entry by the demands of the present system.
What's your opinion? Is this the best we can do?
Gilmore the Sick
Let's see...Gilmore did away with the dreaded car tax. One consequence was that the State government was almost shut down for lack of funds and another has been that all of the illegal aliens who drive around in Northern va. in Escalades and Navigators pay no taxes at all. Then Gilmore became Chair of the National Republican Party. One consequence was I stopped donating to the National. I just gave to our locals. And then Gilmore claimed after six months to want to step down because of "family" reasons. YEAH...Right. A guy with his ambition stepping down for "family" reasons? Try, they saw what a dope he was over at the National. One consequence of his leaving the National. I began to donate money again. Now Gilmore the Ambitious steps down because of some "eye" problem. Yeah..Right. Try, the rest of the country is smarter than the Virginia electorate and sees what the National saw when they got a close look.
worthier candidates?
I think he is wrong. After all, Fred Thompson has put in "years of preparation", and at the moment he seems to be doing OK, much better than Gilmore.
What it DOES seem to take is a reason for national recognition. Fred gets that because he's got a hook, being a well-known actor, and also being a late-coming "savior" figure.
Any well-known national figure could start a campaign tomorrow and have a shot at the Presidency. The biggest factor -- the old media thinking that your candidacy is interesting and viable.
