I'm a week late and $7 short, but better late than never. I wanted to thank Joe Blackburn for stepping up to the plate and challenging Walter Stosch. Every Virginian who values the money in their pocket owes Mr. Blackburn a debt of gratitude.
It will be interesting to see what Walter Stosch shows up next session. I'm not holding my breath, but hopefully Blackburn scared him back to the right.
The other interesting part of this, as Norm has noted, will be if Allen can repair his image with the conservative activists who are baffled by his endorsements of Stosch and others. I believe it will be a long, very long, road back.
Stosch won what will almost
Stosch won what will almost certainly be his last election before retirement. He's a four-year free-agent. Whatever he does between now and 2011 will be what he wants to do and what he thinks is right, whether it's liberal, moderate or conservative. You're trying to take credit on Blackburn's behalf and in advance that if Stosch turns out really to be conservative it's because Blackburn scared him. Blackburn's challenge isn't going to affect who Stosch is or what he thinks is right.
You may be right
You may be right about the next four years (or three, if he does decide to run again), but it's hard to argue that Blackburn did not have an affect this year. And whether you like Stosch or Blackburn, competition is always a good thing.
Walter knows best . . .
I agree that Joe is to be commended, but his efforts will not change Walter one bit. Sadly, the only way the people of that district were going to get a conservative was for them to pitch Walter Stosch overboard. Unfortunately, he's one who will say anything to get elected but continue in his arrogant belief that the voters really don't know what's best. He's a goner at the end of this next term, so he will be even less conservative. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so.
As for Allen, this sealed the deal for him with conservatives. I don't think you will see anyone automatically step aside if he decides he wants to be governor again.
