The Roanoke Times reports that U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia John Brownlee is set to announce this afternoon that he is stepping down from that position effective May 16. There is no word yet what he will do after that, but there has obviously been much speculation that Brownlee is considering a run for Attorney General.
I think that Brownlee would be an excellent candidate for AG and I hope that he decides to run. The press conference is set for 2:30 this afternoon. Based on Brownlee's announcement, we may have more analysis of his potential candidacy later this evening.
I also think John Brownlee
I also think John Brownlee would be a formidable candidate for AG. Here's to hoping he runs! From the press conference remarks, sounds like he may in fact do that.
Believe it-- there is NO
Believe it-- there is NO doubt Brownlee is running. You don't resign from a position like that with open-ended career plans. The Hatch Act will keep him from announcing until he formally goes in May, but we absolutely have another candidate for AG.
And I am very glad we do. Brownlee is a prosecutor (a very good one), has a military background, grew up in NoVa, now in Southwest, good, strong conservative credentials, great looking family-- and, most important, ELECTABLE in the general election. If the GOP wants to hang on to the AG office, we better go with Brownlee. I respect and appreciate Cuccinelli, but we are kidding ourselves if we believe he'll carry the election. Nominating him would be a re-run of what we went through in the 1980s (and last with Mike Farris)--ideologically wonderful candidates that the general electorate just will not vote for, sorry. So--my vote, and money, will be with Brownlee.
Good Luck
He's received his fair share of criticism, but Brownlee did a good job as U.S. Attorney. Don't forget how he showed some refreshing independence from D.C. (Main Justice) in his pursuit of the Oxycontin manufacturer.
I've worked with that office in recent years on a civil matter and found them to be most courteous and professional.
We Need Brownlee
Again I say Brownlee would be a good choice.
I saw him here in Danville, Va a couple of years ago giving some award to some officers that had given a lot of time to a case that they had put many, many hours into and got a conviction of murder into of a young woman. The parents of the woman was there.
They were very positive of the officers and to Brownlee and his office on how much they kept them informed on what was going on and how the case was going and how there were for them during the trial. And during the sentencing phase.
Brownlee also had a hard case in Henry County when the Sheriff and most of his department had to be prosecuted. What happened all but one pleaded out. They knew they were guilty and Brownlee was going to prove it. Even the sheriff pleaded out.
We need Brownlee on the McDonnell, Bolling Ticket....
