I know, I know, this thing isn't over quite yet, so this post is probably premature. Still, I wanted to throw it out here while it was on my mind and see what others were thinking.
With today's endorsement by Rudy Giuliani and tomorrow's expected endorsement by Governor Schwarzenegger, it makes me wonder what kind of names we might soon see bandied about for slots in a potential John McCain administration, should he win the GOP nomination.
Obviously the first question would be the #2 slot on the ticket. Personally, I think that youth and executive experience could be more important factors in that decision than perhaps geography or policy positions. To that end, I'd look at three Governors that would provide good balance to a McCain ticket. Those would be Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. Daniels is a particularly interesting possibility to me given his economic experience and McCain's perceived weaknesses in that area.
Beyond that, the thought of an Attorney General Rudy Giuliani would seem a natural fit, though I could also see him at Homeland Security. Political observers should also note McCain's endorsements by names like Phil Gramm, Sam Brownback, Jack Kemp, Tom Ridge, Charlie Crist John Thune, Dan Lungren and Tom Davis. Also the support of Mayor Giuliani may mean that a number of Giuliani's supports also cross over to support McCain. This could mean the addition of names like Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Ted Olsen and Steve Forbes.
While I am sure that some will point to other McCain supporters who are not conservatives, I think it says a lot about the man that so many solid conservatives feel comfortable supporting him. I would certainly consider myself among that group and I am interested to see what others think a potential McCain administration might look like.
Coburn too
Another big endorsement for McCain, in my opinion, was from Sen. Tom Coburn.
wow, that was quick
I didn't think it was going to happen immediately, but all three of the above Giuliani supporters I mentioned announced today their support for Senator McCain. Perry, Forbes, and Olsen are names that conservatives can be very comfortable with and it shows that McCain is building a coalition across the Republican spectrum.
