Joe Blackburn, who is running against Walter Stosch in the 12th district, has a TV ad out.
As short spots go, it'll do. It's not flashy or slick, but it does raise one interesting point: the proposed gas tax hike from the Senate's 2006 transportation bill (I'm not sure about the 15 cent increase mentioned in the ad...my recollection is that it was a six cent fee on fuel distribution terminals...a wacky attempt to "stick it to big oil.") As I noted here, that push for higher fuel taxes still rankles some folks in the district...more so than the 2004 tax increase.
Funny how Walter's backing for those hikes never made it into George Allen's letter.
The 2006 would-be-tax hike
The actual language on the tax in question from the bill was as such: "imposing a 5% tax on motor fuels that would be based on the statewide average retail price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular gasoline over rolling six-month periods and that would be imposed at a cents per gallon rate."
Thus, at $3/gallon, the tax would be 15 cents.
Hit the nail on the head
You're exectly right DJ with the language, it would make the tax 15 cents at the current prices.
I think we should talk more on the blogs about SB635. In that Omnibus Tax Bill Stosch voted for $10.5 BILLION in tax increases! And we complain about the measely $1.4 billion...we're just being so "anti-tax!"

SB635
SB635 is dead and was incorporated into several different numbers. So there is no SB635. NOVA voters wanted the tax on fuels raised to pay for their roads and did so in a referendum. In the end the final transportation bill was agreed on upon both special sessions of the Senate and House where Janis and Reid both voted YES to them. So how can you say that Stosch is raising taxes when both Janis and Reid are also agreeing to raise taxes.
Take a close look at the bill numbers Blackburn refers to. They are either dead bills, bills that were voted to continue on to a committee and died, or bills that were voted on for language changes. This does not make for a bill to tax more if it dies before it is made into a law! Don't be fooled by Blackburn, he is lying and sleezy. Vote STOSCH.
